Since launching in July of 2011, The Project Room has explored, presented, and discussed the big question, Why Do We Make Things? Everyone has made something at some time in their lives: What if we asked a diverse group of accomplished makers to present their point of view on this question? In this spirit, makers of all kinds of things from music to visual art to technology to architecture have shared their unique perspectives on this question and have, in turn, broadened our understand of what it means to be a part of today’s culture. TPR’s innovative programming takes place on-site in Seattle and online, relying on the curiosity of the general public to make a connection between their ideas and those of the inspiring leaders in creative fields. All of the events are presented in an inclusive manner, without assumptions about what the audience already knows, so that anyone can simply show up for a program and be a part of something exciting.
Featured guests on-site and online so far include Seattle sculptor John Grade, Make MagazineFounder Dale Dougherty, O'Reilly Media CEO Tim O’Reilly, Graphic Novelist Alison Bechdel, installation artist Mandy Greer, Cannes Film Festival honoree Oliver Laxe, experimental musician Stuart Dempster, mathematician and former NY Times columnist Steven Strogatz, Northwest African American Museum Director Barbara Earl Thomas, Singer Carrie Akre, Icelandic textile artist Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir aka Shoplifter, Spectrum Dance Company Artistic Director Donald Byrd, cellist Paul Rucker, members of the former Merce Cunningham Dance Company, architect Tom Kundig, and many other innovative makers.
All TPR events are free and open to the public, and we would like to keep it that way!
The Founders' Circle has been created to support the continuation of TPR for the next three years.
With a goal of raising $100,000 to cover three years of programming, The Founders' Circle members are pledging a minimum of $1,000, which may be paid over a three-year period.
For example, supporting The Project Room as a Founders' Circle member at the minimum pledge of $1,000 may be realized as follows:
$1,000 in one payment
$333 once a year for three years
$100 a month for ten months
TPR functions with an outstanding crew of volunteers, frequent pro-bono services, and supportive and fruitful partnerships. Because of this, a majority of your support goes into paying to create great programs. This is the heart of TPR’s mission: smart, relevant programming that makes an impact on Seattle and beyond.
