Kintsugi: Embracing Damage

Corey Claxton Blaustein June 2, 2014

YouTube vlogger The NerdWriter posts videos that dive into extremely complicated subjects and concepts and gives the view an overall look at how they fit into our daily lives. His most recent video is on the concept of Kintsugi, a Japanese practice of mending broken items. He talks about the significance of a practice like this and really tries to explain why this approach to material things is very prevalent in eastern cultures yet barely apparent in the west.

I love the concept he is describing and I feel it really works into what The Project Room is asking and has asked in the past. The idea of failure as a process in itself is realized through kintsugi, with many people taking part in the practice by destroying their own work and piecing it back together again. The end result can show strength within weakness and beauty within ugliness. It is a concept I want to incorporate into my life.

I recommend you watch more NerdWriter videos as they really dig into many of the underlying processes of living within our world.
